From tackling acne to slowing down ageing—here’s why this wonder ingredient is the OG of all exfoliating acids.

As far as hard-working, multi-tasking skincare ingredients go, glycolic acid from the revered AHA family is sure to top the list. AHAs or alpha hydroxy acids are a group of effective and reliable exfoliating ingredients that are typically derived from fruits. A one-stop solution for a myriad of skin woes, here’s why glycolic acid-based skincare should take centre stage on your shelf…

What is glycolic acid?

Glycolic acid is a water-soluble AHA that is derived from sugarcane. Of all the AHAs, including lactic acid and malic acid, glycolic acid has the smallest molecular weight. This means that it is able to penetrate the skin more effectively to remove dead skin cells from the topmost layers of the skin.

The many benefits of glycolic acid:

  • Exfoliates the skin: Glycolic acid works by loosening the bond between dead skin cells and in effect sloughs them off to reveal smoother skin
  • Brightens skin: Because of its exfoliating benefits, glycolic acid also stimulates new cell generation thereby resulting in improved skin texture and a brighter complexion
  • Fights acne: Not only does glycolic acid shed dead skin cells, but it also prevents other buildup like sebum (oil) and dirt from clogging the pores which is essential when it comes to preventing acne breakouts
  • Helps with fine lines and wrinkles: Due to its smaller molecular size, glycolic acid is known to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production. Collagen is a major component of the skin that improves elasticity and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. However, unlike the instant exfoliation benefits seen with glycolic acid, improvement in lines and wrinkles take place over time with continuous use

How to use glycolic acid:

Glycolic acid is most notably found in sugarcane, however, other natural sources include sugar beets, pineapple, apples and various citrus foods. While consuming these foods does help, it is most effective when made a part of your skincare routine—whether it’s our Superpowered Sugarcane Slurpie Exfoliating Skin Cleanser or the Skinny On Soy Moisturiser that are both loaded with sugarcane to exfoliate skin, boost cell turnover and tackle blemishes.

The goodness of glycolic acid needn’t only be reserved for the face. After all, issues like ‘backne’ and ‘chicken skin’ are commonplace today. The best way to treat these is with a potent body wash  like the Calendula Acne-Control Body Wash that has anti-bacterial (calendula), exfoliating (sugarcane) and healing (chamomile) properties to tackle bumps and blemishes and keep them from recurring.

Tips to remember when using glycolic acid:

  • Glycolic acid can be used by all skin types including acne-prone skin
  • It is best not to mix glycolic acid with other actives like vitamin C and retinol in the same routine
  • Glycolic acid can make the skin sensitive to UV rays therefore using SPF is a must

Glycolic acid is truly a star ingredient that has proven there’s very little it can’t do. And though it can be used at any point to achieve smoother skin, it is especially beneficial for young skin in its fight against blemishes, ageing and dullness.
